Frequently Asked Questions
Getting Started
What can I expect during the first session?
The first session is an opportunity for us to get to know one another. We'll discuss what brings you to therapy, your goals, the challenges you're facing, and what you hope will be different as a result of our work together. You'll also have the opportunity to ask questions and determine whether we're a good fit.
How often should we meet?
Most clients begin with weekly sessions to build momentum and establish new patterns. As progress is made, sessions may transition to every other week or as needed based on your goals.
How long does therapy usually last?
There is no one-size-fits-all answer. Some clients come for support around a specific challenge, while others choose to engage in deeper work over a longer period of time. Therapy is tailored to your needs and goals.
What if I've never been to therapy before?
That's completely okay. Many clients feel nervous before their first appointment. My goal is to create a welcoming, supportive environment where you feel comfortable exploring your concerns and moving toward meaningful change.
Communication & Relationship Counseling
What is a Communication & Relationship Specialist?
Communication impacts every relationship we have—including the one we have with ourselves. As a Communication & Relationship Specialist, I help individuals and couples understand patterns, navigate conflict, express needs effectively, strengthen connection, and build healthier relationships.
Can communication counseling help if we're not in crisis?
Absolutely. Many couples seek counseling not because their relationship is failing, but because they want to strengthen their communication, deepen their connection, and prevent future problems.
Do you work with individuals or only couples?
Both. While many clients come for relationship concerns, you do not need to be in a relationship to benefit from communication-focused counseling. Individuals often seek support around boundaries, difficult conversations, conflict resolution, self-advocacy, and relational patterns.
Can therapy help me communicate more effectively?
Yes. Communication is a skill that can be learned and strengthened. Together, we'll explore the patterns, assumptions, emotions, and habits that influence how you communicate and develop tools that support healthier interactions.
Couples Counseling
Do you use the Gottman Method?
Yes. I am Gottman Level 2 trained and integrate Gottman Method principles into my work with couples. This evidence-based approach focuses on communication, friendship, trust, conflict management, and emotional connection.
Do you work with affair recovery?
Yes. Affair recovery involves more than simply rebuilding trust. Together, we work to understand what happened, improve communication, process hurt, and determine how to move forward with honesty and intention.
What is discernment counseling?
Discernment counseling is designed for couples who are uncertain about the future of their relationship. Rather than rushing toward a decision, the goal is to gain clarity, increase understanding, and thoughtfully determine the next steps.
What is mediation?
Mediation provides a structured process for navigating difficult conversations and resolving conflict. The focus is on improving communication, understanding differing perspectives, and finding productive paths forward.
Do you offer premarital counseling?
Yes. Premarital counseling helps couples build a strong foundation before marriage by exploring communication styles, conflict patterns, expectations, values, friendship, intimacy, and long-term goals.
Faith-Informed Counseling
Do you offer Christian counseling?
Yes. Faith-informed counseling is available for clients who would like their faith incorporated into the therapeutic process.
Do I need to be Christian to work with you?
No. Individuals and couples from all backgrounds are welcome. Therapy is tailored to your values, beliefs, and goals.
Can faith be incorporated into couples counseling?
Absolutely. For couples who desire it, conversations can include faith perspectives, spiritual practices, and discussions about shared values and beliefs.
